Artificial intelligence is often described as neutral.

Which is impressive, considering it was designed by humans.

Humans are famous for many things. Neutrality is not one of them.

Yet listen to the way people talk about AI and you would think it appeared spontaneously, like weather. Something that simply formed in the atmosphere of the internet and drifted into our lives.

But AI did not appear out of thin air. It was designed, funded, trained, optimized, and shipped by very specific groups of people sitting in very specific rooms.

What might artificial intelligence look like if more women had been in the room when it was built?


The Myth of Neutral Technology

Before anyone panics, this is not a claim that women possess mystical ethical powers that automatically produce better technology. Humans are humans. Give any group enough venture capital and someone will eventually build a slightly evil productivity app.

But diversity changes the conversation.

When the same type of person dominates a field, certain assumptions become invisible. They feel natural. Obvious. Beyond question.

And that is exactly where blind spots grow.

Consider the early culture of Silicon Valley. The dominant mythology was simple: build fast, scale globally, fix problems later. Move fast and break things. Preferably before the competition does.

This mindset produced incredible innovation. It also produced platforms that occasionally forgot to ask whether the thing being built should exist in the first place.

When most of the people in the room share the same training and the same incentives, the same types of questions get asked.

How do we make this model larger?

How do we process more data?

How do we deploy faster?

How do we win the market?

All reasonable questions.

But not the only questions that could exist.


A Different Room

Imagine a slightly different room.

Still engineers. Still ambitious. Still excited about new technology. But with a broader range of experiences shaping the discussion.

Someone might ask a different kind of question.

Not how fast can we build this system, but what kinds of decisions will people start outsourcing to it?

Not how much data can we gather, but what kinds of lives are represented inside that data and which ones are missing.

Not how powerful can this tool become, but who will carry the cost when it fails.

These are not anti‑technology questions. They are design questions.

The funny thing about technology is that it often reflects the personality of the people who built it.

Airplanes reflect engineers who hate gravity.

Social media reflects entrepreneurs who hate boredom.

And artificial intelligence increasingly reflects a culture that believes intelligence is something you can scale like cloud storage.

Which might be true.

Or it might be one of the most expensive philosophical experiments in history.


The Problems We Choose to Solve

Another interesting detail is the types of problems that get attention.

For decades, the most prestigious challenges in AI involved beating humans at games.

Chess.

Go.

Poker.

Strategy. Competition. Optimization under pressure.

All fascinating problems. All impressive technical achievements.

But notice what rarely appeared at the top of the agenda.

Systems designed to help people communicate better.

Tools built to navigate emotional complexity.

Models trained to support everyday human decisions rather than dominate intellectual arenas.

Again, none of this proves that women would have built a dramatically different AI landscape. Predicting alternate technological histories is a hobby mostly practiced by science fiction writers and historians who enjoy speculative regret.

But perspective influences curiosity.

And curiosity determines which problems feel worth solving.


The Blind Spots of Intelligence

Even today, we see hints of this dynamic.

Research into AI bias often begins with the realization that the systems reflect the limitations of their training data.

Facial recognition systems that struggle with darker skin tones.

Language models that mirror cultural stereotypes.

Recommendation algorithms that quietly amplify the loudest voices in a system rather than the wisest ones.

These are not mysterious technical glitches. They are reflections of the environments in which the systems were created.

Artificial intelligence learns from the world we feed it.

If a broader range of people had been consistently involved in shaping these systems from the beginning, the resulting AI might not be radically different.

But the list of questions asked during development might have been longer.

And longer question lists tend to produce better tools.


Better Rooms

One of the quiet myths of modern technology is that technical brilliance automatically leads to wise systems.

It does not.

Brilliance builds powerful machines.

Wisdom decides where those machines should be pointed.

The problem is not that the people who built AI lacked intelligence. On the contrary, many of them are among the smartest engineers alive.

The problem is that intelligence alone does not eliminate blind spots.

It simply allows you to build them faster.

When people talk about diversity in technology, the conversation often becomes moral very quickly.

But there is also a practical argument.

Different experiences produce different questions.

Different questions reveal different problems.

And discovering problems earlier is one of the most efficient ways to improve technology.

If artificial intelligence sometimes appears confused about the world, it may be because the room where it learned to think was smaller than the world it is now expected to understand.

That does not make the technology evil.

It makes it human.

And perhaps the most interesting thing about AI today is that the room is finally getting larger.

More researchers.

More disciplines.

More perspectives.

More people asking uncomfortable questions before the product launch rather than after the scandal.

Progress in technology rarely comes from a single brilliant mind. It comes from messy conversations between many different ones.

Artificial intelligence is no exception.

So on International Women’s Day, instead of arguing about whether AI would be perfect if women had built it, we might consider a more useful thought.

Technology reflects the people who build it.

If we want better technology, we need better rooms.

Larger ones.

Rooms where more types of people are allowed to ask inconvenient questions before the machines learn the wrong lessons.

Because artificial intelligence did not become biased because the machines made mistakes.

It became biased because the machines learned from us.

And for a very long time, the room they were learning from was smaller than we like to admit.

We Keep Asking What AI Will Become

We talk about AI as if it’s an unstoppable force arriving from the future. But inevitability is a story we tell ourselves when we don’t want to examine the choices we’re already making. The real shift isn’t coming. It’s happening quietly, one decision at a time.
